IRATA Level 1 Training Course

IRATA Level 1 - Industrial rope access training in Southern Africa

The IRATA Level 1 rope access training course is the entry-level operator qualification level. It’s aimed at individuals with little or zero previous experience in environments in which ropes and associated equipment are used to gain access to hard-to-reach or at-height locations in order to carry out work.

You must be over the age of 18, and medically fit to work at heights..

The IRATA level 1 training is a total of 6 consecutive days - 1 day refresher, 4 days training, 1 day independent assessment. Cost of the course is R11,500 per person excluding VAT.

On acceptance to the course, a R4 000.00 deposit (non-refundable) to confirm your spot on the course is required. Payment can be made online. If WACO Rope Access cancels the course your deposit will be refunded. Balance is due at least 7 days before the course starts. Failure to pay could result in losing your place on the course and your deposit.

  • Physically fit, Medical Certificate of fitness for work at height SA Law requires that certificates for work at height must be signed by an occupational health practitioner (nurse, doctor or health practitioner registered with the Health Professional Council of SA).
  • Be able to read and write English to NQF level 1.
  • Functioning literacy in English (or African language.)

To progress to the Level 2 course, IRATA stipulates a minimum requirement of 1000 hours of varied types of work over a minimum of 12 months, as a level 1 technician. WACO Rope Access recommends you complete 1 500 hours to advance.

All IRATA courses are valid for three years and can be renewed at any IRATA centre around the world.

The following documents MUST be brought to the course:

  • Original WACO Rope Access course registration form
  • Balance of amount owing for course
  • Medical fitness certificate – dated no earlier than 12 months before date of course
  • Updated CV
  • IRATA logbook UPDATED AND SIGNED on the first day of the course
  • Previous assessment form – yellow copy
  • IRATA Certificate
  • Copy of Identity document
  • A black pen
  • A notebook
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of the requirements for progression and that you in fact comply with these requirements.
  • All upgrades that occur at less than 2 years since your previous assessment require preapproval by WACO Rope Access. All new level 3 applications require pre-approval by WACO Rope Access.
  • Be able to read and write English to NQF level 1.
  • You should have a copy of the training manual, Irata ICOP and TACS. If you don’t have, these can be obtained from our office. We suggest that you read through these a few times before arriving for the course.
